Sometimes the child in the woods is silent for a minute or an hour.
I get no relief from his silence because when there are no cries coming from the woods, different cries echo from my memories.
Thinner cries.
Desperate cries.
Hopeless cries.
The cries from the woods have pulled me to the door.
I know better than to go out when I can hear the wind screaming, a discordant harmony with the cries.
I've sunk to the dusty floor by the door, curled in around myself, my shaking hands clamped over my ears.
They do nothing to muffle his crying.
I've screamed, banged pots, thrown plates, anything to make noise.
Sometimes I can drown out the cries from the woods for a moment, but it never lasts.
I've even tried crying, but I haven't spilled a tear since the baby died.
It felt as if between the baby's first breath and his last, I didn't stop crying.
No mother can ignore the cry of her child forever, not even when she knows better.
A flutter of peace settles my staccato heart when I make the decision.
I pull myself off the floor, using the door as leverage.
The snow has frozen the latch and it resists opening.
If I had thought the house had any love for me, I'd have suspected it was trying to protect me.
But any love this house had to give died with the baby.
The door gives way, swinging inwards as the weight of a small avalanche of snow shoves it against the wall.
