Now I am the one crying.
I remember these tears, silent and hot, from before the baby died.
I shift him in my arms so he can reach my other breast.
I keep my eyes closed and my teeth gritted as much as I can while my body shakes and shivers with cold and pain.
The baby chews and slurps and sucks.
I try to recapture the feelings of satisfaction and contentment I had been feeling at finally feeding him.
I concentrate on the feeling of him in my arms, weighty and solid.
But I can't forget it's my body giving him that weight.
That as he becomes more, I become less.
When he finally scrapes against my bones again, his head lulls away from my chest, and he makes drunk, contented murmurs.
I open my eyes, and find his, too, are finally open, just a slit.
But there's nothing behind the lids.
I can't look at his missing eyes, so I use my battered blood-splash skirt to wipe the blood caked and drying on his mouth and chin.
did it even though it hurt even though it still hurts i did as a mother should and i fed my child the witch reaches down and plucks the baby from my arms i cry out and surge to my feet or try to my legs are numb and my dress is heavy with my blood i collapse ungracefully back to the ground
No, he's mine.
The witch pats my head with a thin, wrinkled hand, her rough skin catching against my loose hair, as she cradles my child against her with one hand.
No, dear, he's mine.
Your baby is dead in the ground.
I shake my head violently and ignore the way the black spots swim across my vision as I claw at her tattered skirt.
