A very vivid memory of standing with a foster carer.
I used to work with children in care service and, um,
She was trying to talk to me and this little boy who I'd just brought back to her was banging on a patio door and it was quite late in the evening and he's banging on the door going, can I go out to play, can I go out to play, can I go out to play, can I go out to play?
really loud and we were trying to speak so I could leave and she said every every few words she just went no so she'd chat chat chat no chat chat chat no and um and I made a joke laughed or said something about her keep saying no and she said Helen what you hear is no and what he hears is I love you oh I mean
Yeah, that stayed with me for many, many years.
I think that was about, oh, 23 years ago.
And it stayed with me.
And I always, so I have a mantra when I teach about boundaries, which is boundaries are an act of love.
Yeah.
Wow.
And yeah.
Because they're apart from that scenario where you're setting boundaries for the safety of other people, for their well-being.
It's also that idea that people get to know you.
So it's an act of love to show yourself, to show who you are and how you want people to engage with you.
Yeah, and it strikes me that how people perceive that boundary, like you say, what they hear, what they perceive.
One of my other mentors is that a boundary isn't to punish someone else.
And sometimes we think that they think it might be or it's perceived as such.
And it's that perspective taking, isn't it?
And I'm interested about what you said earlier about some boundaries are flexible and obviously we both work with people within structures, within systems that can be challenging.
And it may well be that you or one sets a boundary that occasionally is imposed on and maybe it's seen as a slightly more flexible boundary.
