Tim received a kidney from a genetically modified Yucatan miniature pig in January 2025.
This is not the first time a pig kidney transplant has occurred, but the procedure marks the longest dialysis-free survival following a pig kidney transplant, with Tim living with the organ for nine months.
It wasn't a simple process, though.
Dr Riella says it took years to develop genetically modified Yucatan miniature pigs with humanised organs.
After nine months, the pig kidney eventually failed and had to be removed.
Tim then received a human kidney and is now doing well.
This is also the first time someone has successfully moved from a pig kidney transplant to a human kidney transplant.
Dr. Riella hopes this breakthrough will pave the way for mainstream use of xenotransplantation in the next few years.
