It certainly didn't seem that way at first.

The woman, who's chosen to remain anonymous, took her ticket to a newsagent to check if she had won.

After entering her numbers on a machine, a message popped up that read, non-payable.

She thought this meant that there were no winnings and tossed the ticket in the bin there and then.

It was a Sunday, so the bin lorry was found before its contents were dumped in a landfill and the workers agreed to help look for it.

But they take years to decompose, often releasing toxic chemicals and killing marine animals who eat the fragments by mistake.

Now, scientists here in the UK say they've developed the world's first truly biodegradable party balloon.

While other balloons on the market claim to be eco-friendly, they actually still take years to break down.

The invention of the so-called BioLoon grew out of the concerns of party planner Charlotte Mellier.
