Chester Abbott turned, made his way up the path and into the house.
A few minutes later, he came out, closed the gate behind him, and got into our car.
On the way back downtown, he talked pleasantly about the weather, the nursery business, and his dogs.
When we got to the office, we found out the reason for his sudden change in temperament.
His lawyer was waiting for us at the door.
We tried to interrogate Abbott, but the lawyer objected to just about every question we asked.
It was hopeless, and we knew it, and so did the lawyer.
We released Abbott, but not before we got the name and address of his sister in Alhambra, where the stepson, Bruce, was supposedly staying.
After Abbott and his lawyer left, Ed and I signed out of the office and drove to Alhambra to check on the boy.
