if I'm right, this false self-conception come about.

I think that is incredibly interesting, and I wish I was more of a historian of ideas and also had more patience to try to resolve that question.

I simply just don't know.

I consider a number of options very briefly in the first part of the book, none of which strike me as particularly satisfactory.

I think it's incredibly striking that prior to the

80s almost, you wouldn't find any leading philosophers who had this picture of philosophy.

It wasn't part of Frege, Russell, Wittgenstein, Carnap, Klein, Davidson, even Rawls.

Rawls talks about intuitions, but he didn't think that was what drove philosophy more generally.

I mean, more or less anyone that you pick as your favorite philosopher, it would be very hard-pressed to find passages in which

their mythological views for that philosophy at its foundation was driven by intuitions about sonic experiments.

So something happened, just what it is, is an interesting question.

Yakuhintika suggests in a paper that one thing that made a big difference was Chomsky.

And maybe that's true, right?

I find it a bit implausible that

he had that much influence across philosophy, but it's an open question.

And then to your more specific question, how should we think about what Chomsky is doing?

I don't think it is very helpful to think of him as claiming that intuition in the sort of interesting philosophical sense is what you find as the basic evidence for a grammar or a syntax.

I mean, first of all, this view wasn't worked out in any detail about what intuitions are in Chomsky, so it's very hard to tell when you ask him about it.

He disowned the term.

He says, no, I didn't mean anything that has to do with anything interesting in the philosophical tradition.
