We teamed up, and he did an analysis of government data that helped prove a dramatic resurgence of the disease.

And actually, a more recent study found that one in five working coal miners who've been tested for black lung, and that's thousands of coal miners, had signs of the disease.
Now, we also found one likely reason for this.

By the time I was 40 years old, I'd mined more coal than most miners seen in a lifetime.
And in fact, we found that on average, coal miners were each working 600 more hours a year.
And there was something else that Mark McCowan and other miners talked about.
The big coal seams were gone.
The thinner coal seams that remained were still valuable, and they were embedded in rock.
Sometimes the coal was reduced to a two-inch thickness.
But the rest of what you need to mine may be solid rock.
