Okay, here's my knee-jerk reaction.
When we first got my dog, she would sleep in the crate and she kept pooping in her crate in the middle of the night.
And my dad had heard that if you shorten the space that they can be in in the crate, then they'll have to poop where they're going to sleep later that night.
So they'll stop doing it.
