And I'd argue that we probably weren't because how we achieved that was simply by bringing more and more people into the country.
Yeah.
Um, increasing the size of the population.
Which made it look like the economy was growing.
But if you actually had a closer look into the numbers, the pie, the overall GDP pie was getting bigger, but the s but the individuals within our economy were getting a smaller slice of the pie.
And the reason was our governments took the uh the credit for having this good GDP growth, but they refused to invest in the infrastructure.
They refused to allow our cities to to operate to the standard um that was required to have all these extra people.
You know, transport services, health services, schooling, all of these things that you need to make a city to make cities operate efficiently.
The money really wasn't going in there.
And then the other side of it too was business.
Opted to uh instead of investing back in their businesses and making their workers more productive, they were handing the money out in dividends to shareholders, which you know, the shareholders loved it.
But it didn't do anything to help our productivity problem.
And so now here we are, you know, you know, 20 or a quarter of a century since that first uh intergenerational report, and we suddenly realize, well, we've got a productivity.
problem and it's really down to a lack of investment.
Now, I guess this um this shift towards uh all or the thinking now from the government is we're suddenly going to get back up to, you know, more than one percent productivity growth, that's rooted in the idea that uh
Artificial intelligence, there's a huge amount of money being poured into that.
That's gonna go into the economy and that's gonna make Australian workers more productive.
Will it?
Well, we don't know, do we?
