It normalizes having these people who probably started out as actual regular music fans.
turning into billboards for these record companies because they're just getting these offers and, like, the affordability crisis, and it's easy for them to say yes.
Yeah, but it normalizes a system that is maybe not the most beneficial to the artists and, like, the fans that they're looking to connect with and is maybe not the most beneficial to a creator who genuinely loves music and wants to share music with an audience.
And...
is now developing a relationship with a label or an agency that raises a lot of like ethical and legal questions.
I think it speaks to how so many of these trends aren't accidents and they're intentional.
And we should be aware or at least approach them with some skepticism when it seems like the trends that we are seeing in music or in other forms of art reflect a certain cultural or social agenda.
The influencer that told me that, I was really shocked to hear that like, you know, there was a big movement of like bedroom rap and protest music, especially, I mean, I'm thinking during the summer of BLM and during 2020, like hip hop played such a core part of
the musical scene and how we talked about music in like a racial and social context and understanding that there's been a concerted effort from some labels to move away from that and towards country music, which maybe aligns with different political values and a different sociocultural context.
I think that that says a lot about
the goals of this industry and like what kind of politics they're in line with.
And it's shocking.
And I think it's concerning because I think it's easy to look at the charts and be like, wow, that's crazy.
That country music all of a sudden is popping off.
But it's like these things aren't necessarily happening on accident.
It feels like it because I think to your point, Brittany, social media in particular used to feel so democratic and fun when it was like you only interacted with the people that you followed.
I remember being on Tumblr and Twitter as a young teenager and making friends with other people who ran fan accounts for a particular pop punk band or for One Direction or whatever.
And those communities all felt like real 13-year-old girls behind their computer screens.
And it just feels more and more like...
Now so much of what's on our feeds is being programmed for us.
