Des Moines Superintendent Ian Roberts was arrested after fleeing a traffic stop initiated by ICE agents.
Roberts is from Guyana in South America, but grew up in Brooklyn.
ICE says he received a final removal order last year.
The agency also says there were weapon charges against him in 2020, and a loaded gun was found in his car.
Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris says she hasn't been able to verify new information, but praised how Roberts led the district.
