Let us begin.
I remember years ago when they took everyone's earrings.

Everything golden.
I remember the mold of the mass they had beat out, ugly and asymmetrical.
A wide, malformed, serene smile below two wide, misshapen golden eyes, the wire-frame halo with names lovingly, carefully etched out into each of the twelve rays that blossomed from the head like a flower.
I remember the frail, browned corpse of the vessel.
The old woman who would feed me juice while she cradled me in her skinny, bony arms.
The old crone even my dad was afraid of.
I remember standing in line with the other kids as our parents oohed and aahed at us, taking photos as we all held the 15 foot long wooden prod in our tiny hands, as though presenting it to the camera, the boys trying to lift it higher than the girls.
We couldn't have been older than 11 then.
