They gave me a glass of pale lemonade earlier.
I knew what was in it when I drank it.
I'm staring at the cup, at the condensation running down the scaled glass, watching small, twisting floaters dance in a slow circle near the top as the ice melted in the summer heat.
I'm lowered, motionless, down the chimney.
My head lolls back, scraping against the ancient brick.
I can't turn my head away, so I watch the faces of the men, my old neighbors, watching my descent.
One looks away, the other, my old teacher, smiles encouragingly at me.
Behind them, I see the sun is split into two smaller orbs.
The ropes dig into the old brick at the top, flicking tiny stone fragments to dust my face, tapping lightly on my lips, cheeks.
One small fragment falls in my eye and lays there, stuck to my eye, moving with my pupil as I try to focus on it.
My cheek twitches, but the best I can do is make a low moaning noise in my throat.
The ropes dig into me too.
I can't feel pain.
It makes this much easier.
This is an interesting perspective, like a child being offered, you know, undergoing some ritual.
It's also very beautifully written so far.
Yeah.
Yeah, very well written.
My feet finally touch the bottom of the fireplace, sliding out from under me as I come to a rest at the bottom.
The ropes go slack, then drop, slapping my back, top of my head.
