I'm left with a respect for Roy, actually, because we don't always see the struggles behind public profiles and successful people.
Reminds me of comments about that public figures get or assumptions that people have made about my background, for example, people being uncomfortable with the idea of someone being self-made or that kind of thing.
For me, people get surprised when they find out my ancestors were labourers or cotton factory workers.
They assume I must have come from some other privilege.
So in that sense, I appreciated learning about her background and the struggles she went through to get to this position that she was in.
And clearly, her mother played a big part in her success, not just because some of her work is semi-autobiographical, but it's because it's made Roy who she is.
Absolutely.
In all three of these books, actually, there's something about the psychological challenges that people face.
Roy, there's a lot of trauma that obviously she's carried with her.
With her success, there's something that remains bittersweet.
Her mother's responses to her success also really embody that bittersweet nature of success.

classical genres and popular genres.
I do think it's something that's always existed.
I mean, tragedy was seen as greater than comedy and epic was seen as better than pastoral and so on.
So I don't think it's new.
