And so here the author of Hebrews explains that God swore an oath.
He made a covenant and appointed the Son to serve as covenant surety.
Now let's stop here for a moment and let's ask the question: what's a surety?
I think a lot of times when we hear the word surety or when we hear the word guarantor, we think for example when someone cosigns a loan.
They serve as a guarantor.
Anytime I go to the doctor's office, they say, who is the guarantor should the insurance company not pay the bill?
And I always sign my name.
I am the guarantor.
Or if my sons go into the doctor's office or my daughter, who is the guarantor?
Well, I am the guarantor.
Now, a guarantor is not a cosigner.
My dad was a cosigner on my first car loan.
I wish he was a guarantor instead of a cosigner.
A cosigner says, if you fail to pay, then I will pay.
A guarantor says I will pay.
That's a much better arrangement.
