That doesn't mean that they're not relevant to each other, but they're different realms.
Politics is the world of
compromise.
It is the world of working things out.
It's often said that the legislative process is sausage making, and I think that's true.
It's people with all kinds of different opinions and strongly held opinions and interests, and they somehow manage to put something together that's at least workable for everybody.
That is not religion.
Religion is, as the theologian Paul Tillich used to say, religion is the realm of ultimate concern.
And politics is not the realm of the ultimate.
It's the realm of the partial.
It's the realm of just getting it done and getting on with it.
So there are different things and religion, of course, carries with it certain expectations of human behavior, having to do with how we conduct ourselves, having to do with fundamental values.
But religion is not a political program.
It's not, um, the kind of thing that gets its way into a party platform or a debt legislative form that's politics.
Religion is, is very different from them.
I think that the opposite of not compromising would be idolatry.
It would be to say that, you know, it's my way or the highway and that I am the custodian of absolute truth.
I mean, I know
My way is God's way.
Your way, therefore, is not God's way.
