This isn't just a political position or a political opponent or a political ally.
This is a human being, and I recognize this person as a human being.
And I think that congregations, I'm not talking about church hierarchies or central control, but on the very local congregational basis, if religious congregations would take it upon themselves to be reconciling forces within their community, what a gift that would be.
Well, I don't know if it still exists.
There was something called the Senate Fair Breakfast, where senators just got together and basically shared experiences.

The personality, you know, my first day in the US Senate, the day I was sworn in, we had a little dinner party, family, mainly close friends.
And we invited my senior colleague in the Senate, Tom Eagleton.
I was a Republican.
He was a Democrat.
I was conservative.
He was progressive.
We voted very differently.
But at that dinner, when we didn't even know each other,
he turned to me and he said, I know you wish your father were still alive.
You know, we had something in common.
We both had lost our fathers.
And he that was how he saw me.
He didn't see me as a senator, or as a Republican, or as somebody with a political point of view that was very different from his own.
He saw me as a human being.
