England finished their World Cup campaign here at the Miami Stadium on Saturday with a 6-4 win in the bronze final over France, meaning that England officially finished third.
They got their bronze medals.
And as Thomas Tuchel reminded us afterwards, this is now England's second best ever World Cup campaign.
It's the first time they've won this third, fourth place playoff game, having lost it in 1990 and in 2018.
It's their best ever World Cup.
on foreign soil.
So I think in an objective sense, this has been a really good World Cup for England.
If you ask most England fans before the tournament how they would feel about coming third, beating France in the playoff, beating Mexico away at the Azteca Stadium, beating Norway in the quarterfinals in extra time, I think people would say it's pretty good.
The question I think going forward is this.
To what extent does the objective facts, which I think are in Thomas Tuchel's favour, balance against the real pain and anger and frustration with the second half of the semi-final against Argentina?
England had one foot in the World Cup final and they threw it away.
And people are really upset about that.
You can see even the players and the England staff and Thomas Tuchel have been affected by the emotions from Wednesday night and after.
They've spoken very openly about how much it's hurt them.
Thomas Tuchel has repeatedly called it a scar, which keeps getting worse.
And I think the big question really going into the Nations League campaign, which starts in September, is how the England public feel about this.
Do they feel that this has been a good campaign and they're proud of how the players did and Tuchel did and they'll be positive in their support?
Or are they still going to be angry at Thomas Tuchel?
