It was the Soviet-backed communists
and the Antifa guerrillas that were running around Spain that had been unleashed by the socialist government of Spain at the time in the 1930s.
Remember, this is pre-World War II.
And the Soviet Union had backed them up.
The first thing they did was they sent all of the gold of the treasury of Spain to Moscow.
So they looted it because they're criminals and thieves.
They sent all the gold back to Moscow.
Then they started going to the churches.
And they always start with the churches, Steve.
And what did they do?
They started killing the priests, and if there were any nuns, they put them up on the altar, and they started raping the nuns on the church altars.
Then they would shoot the nuns in the head and put their bodies up in the middle of the town square so everyone would see what would happen because the church was always associated with God, with hierarchy, with all of these things.
They always come for the Christians first.
Then they went after anyone who was associated with the landowners.
For example, I don't know, if you owned two houses maybe, and you had one house in the country and one house in the city, they would come after you, and you would be put before the people's committees, and then you would be judged.
And eventually, Steve, the Spanish military said essentially, no mas.
And so the Spanish Civil War took place.
Franco did not start the Civil War, by the way.
um he was not the first person to uh you know to begin that but once it did take place he rose to become the leader of the spanish nationalist forces and fought to restore the monarchy of spain and and this is the big thing the big issue there because nobody talks about yes there was a war yes there was a civil war of course and we talk about that in the book
But nobody seems to talk about what happened before Franco rose to power.
