I want to ask her more about kisses in literature.

okay we're back so katie i said we're going to talk about kisses in literature but before we get there i wanted to ask you how important are the illustrations to the book in your mind i was really struck by some of the illustrations and and what they were able to show and what they probably meant to you when you discovered them or when you realized that it was going to help illustrate no pun intended a point

Perfectly.

Can you give us an example of an illustration or two that really seemed to you to kind of help encapsulate what you were trying to convey?

Mm hmm.

And I mentioned this earlier, but the famous Eisenstein picture of the sailor and the woman in Times Square.

I mean, one of the things I'm always struck by is is how uncomfortable it looks to be her, you know, bent over almost backwards and bent.

you know, and him kind of leaning her back.

And it does seem like not only is she in a position of submission to him, it almost seems like it's submission to passion or submission to the romantic.

And it does seem like we turn a kiss in that sense into one that's kind of unequal.

that for the man, it's all agency and he's deciding to do this.

I'm determined to kiss you like this and I will make this happen.

And for the woman, it's, I will let this happen.

Right.
