I like the weight of Mendelssohn's, but hey, The Odyssey is good enough that you could read it more than once.

There's room in there to enjoy it in different ways, I think.

And there are older translations too, which is, of course, what I started out with way back when.

And if I had one little pang of regret as I read the Mendelssohn, it was that I missed the phrase, the wine-dark sea.

Now, I wouldn't ordinarily bring something up that's this picayune, but it sent me down a rabbit hole.

That's pretty interesting.

I thought I'd share it with you.

Mendelssohn says wine-faced sea, and there's an explanation for it.

It's more accurate.

for one thing.

Apparently in Greek, the word is either face or eye.

And so there are a lot of connotations we miss by focusing just on the color, wine, dark sea.

But what is wine-faced?

I didn't really know.

Does that mean like a drunk person who's a little bit crazy?

I guess it could mean that.

But for Mendelssohn,

It's more about the reflections, the shifting reflectiveness of the sea.

It's one color at one time of day or another.

It looks darker at night.
