I can't let my mum down.
My last words to her were, I'm going to make you proud.
And then my goal from the restorative justice process was, one day I want to be able to look in the mirror and say I'm proud of myself.
That was my goal.
So I've got all these kind of like responsibilities, expectations, people, like huge people in my life that I'm like making promises to, right?
And it was one on a deathbed, one whose son I've killed, you know, my brother who's living with me.
And I was driving to meet these people
who had completely changed my life and I'd never even met them.
And that was just a strange feeling of going there and going, I can't believe how much respect I've got for these people, how much of an impact these people have had in my life just by asking me questions.
The thing about restorative justice is it's the practitioner's job to make sure beyond reasonable doubt
that there's no surprises.
So everything is talked about.
You've got, you know, who's going to talk first, what are we going to talk about, who's going to be in the room, how would you feel if someone responded this way?
So you know all the questions, you know what everyone's going to say.
sadness now i mean in a you know in a 15 year cycle of events that you must have thought about endlessly but does it give you a certain sadness that david is unable to forgive you no um because i respect his decision and and if joan turned around tomorrow and said she doesn't want to forgive me that would be fine as well because i don't want my choices to be dependent on somebody else's forgiveness
And there's a danger with forgiveness that people, because I've been in prisons and I've seen forgiveness get talked about or people know that I've been forgiven by one of the parents and they'll go, oh, I need forgiveness in order to move forward, in order to change.
And I'm like, no, you don't.
Like, don't give away your agency to somebody else.
Like, you...
are in control of your choices and you can't defer that to anybody else.
