In them, Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for attorney general, talked about the Republican speaker of Virginia's House of Delegates at the time being shot.
Jones apologized publicly for the remarks and said he had also apologized to the former speaker.
He said he was embarrassed and ashamed by what he said.
The text messages drew widespread condemnation from fellow Democratic candidates, including gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger, who said the violent language did not belong in politics.
Recent polls put Jones ahead of incumbent Republican Jason Meares.
Their contest is considered to be the closest of the three statewide races in Virginia's off-year election.

Earlier this week, Yunkin was touting reducing twenty-five percent of Virginia's regulations.
He also pointed out that artificial intelligence played a role in helping.
Now he's ordered Virginia's regulatory office to issue AI generated reports on all of Virginia's regulations.
Just reducing the number of words and guidance is a goal too.
Executive agencies will have eight weeks from receiving the report to start implementing recommendations.

33 local Virginia governments are on the list, including in conservative places. Hanover County officials in central Virginia said they didn't know why they made the list, and federal partners didn't explain. Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin said he asked local governments to respond.
