I see Mason, the foreman, shout, twirling his hand in the air.
This elicits a groan from the work crew.
They've heard this from him every evening for six straight years, those who have stuck around at least.
I've been here for all six years, ever since the tunnel was discovered, ever since everyone realized it needed to be sealed, constantly needed to be sealed.
Hey Mason, I yell at the guy.
I watch his shoulders slump.
He tries to pretend he doesn't hear me and starts talking to one of the workers as the crew prepares to reseal the tunnel.
Mason, I yell again.
A couple of the crew look around the foreman and over at me as I sit in my little guard house.
It was built on the side of the old road leading into the tunnel.
I smile and wave.
One of the workers rolls his eyes, the other just shakes his head.
I yell a third time.
Mason finally responds.
He's not working, he's chatting.
It's about all he does these days, other than his rousing little places to go speech.
