One of the reasons they think that the wildfires, when they take hold in places such as California or Colorado or wherever, that they burn so much and cause so much damage is because humans have encroached into the wild lands to a dramatic degree.
In 1910, there was a fire in Idaho that spread to neighboring states called the Big Blow Up.
More than 85 people were killed, and as a direct result, the US Forest Service and Fire Service decided that all fires would have to be out by 10 a.m.

The result of that was that they stopped burning fire as land management, which allowed the fuel to build up, and that has caused an enormous problem there, and that is now a debate that we're having in this country about allowing fuel to build up without having controlled burns when it's cooler.
