They're divided into two.
There's your quarks and your electrons.
Two types of quarks, up and down quarks.
They make up protons and neutrons.
And then you're two types of electrons.
You've got your electrons, which well, we know they make up atoms and you know give rise to electricity and all that good stuff.
And then there's your neutrinos, which are mostly involved in radioactive decay.
Electron electrinos are electrically neutral, so they don't interact very often.
The up and down quarks have a color charge, so they feel the strong force.
Electrons and neutrinos do not have a color charge, they do not feel the strong force.
Um electrons and quarks all have an electric charge, so they all feel the electromagnetic force.
And they all have weak isospin, so they all feel the weak force.
Alright, well that's all nice and neat and tidy.
Um but those of you who are familiar with this will know that there's an important aspect that I've left off at this point for simplicity, but we now need to introduce.
In particular, I've talked about just up and down quarks and electrons as if there's only one type of those.
But actually, there's not.
There's an up and a down quark and then electron and an electron neutrino.
Actually, that those four particles form just one of what are called generations of matter or generations of fermions.
And there are three of these generations.
What does that mean?
