It's a tiny marine algae.
And algaes photosynthesise like plants.
Yeah, well done.
So it's one of the main reasons why the ocean is such an important carbon sink.
Basically, the way that whales can help boost phytoplankton is through fertilising them.
Like farmers adding manure to crops, whale poo can add important nutrients to nutrient-poor areas of the sea.
But Olaf thinks that the IMF paper attributes way too much phytoplankton carbon cycling to whales.
The IMF also assumes that phytoplankton stores this carbon forever, whereas 99% of it actually gets cycled or released back into the environment.
Of that 1% that sinks, whales can't claim much credit.
Yeah.
Unfortunately, we must throw in the towel of whale-based climate salvation.
