The next question is from none other than historian, author and friend of the Radical podcast, Tom Holland.

His book Dominion argues that Western secular moral values like human rights, equality and care for the weak are not universal constants, but are fundamentally Christian in origin.

He sent us this voice note.

I think something else that's interesting is that I think a lot of religious authority figures are quite keen not to see an establishment now.

I think if you were like a bishop in the 1950s or 60s, you'd have been quite proud of your position in the establishment.

But as you say, figures like Pope Leo almost consciously trying to lead away from that traditional image of Christianity, I think.

So the church is changing as well.

I guess, though, the pushback to that would be that a lot of people would say,

For all that church membership is declining, churches are still unbelievably wealthy, powerful institutions.

And is it ever possible to find something that feels countercultural in an institution that owns loads of land, has a lot of money, and still does probably have a lot of power?

Here's a question from Matt, who says, Hi, Lamorna and James.

To what extent has modern spirituality replaced traditional religious concepts and therefore made it harder for traditional religion to ever make a comeback?

I'm talking about things like karma, the phrase, everything happens for a reason, horoscopes, crystals, manifestation and energy.

And that's really well put.

And I often think that maybe it's the case that Christianity is somewhat less alien than it originally seems because we tend to underestimate how in minor ways we are constantly spiritualizing our lives by believing that everything happens for a reason or having minor superstitions or believing in luck.
