But evidently, there is among at least some people an appetite for it.

And if they want to find it, there are channels for them to find it.

And Lamorna herself is a case in point.

It's very easy to think of reading as a kind of hobby, you know, as a slightly old-fashioned hobby, like fly fishing or something.

And no one reads anymore, but whatever, no big deal.

We got our information through our iPhones now, so that doesn't matter.

I really strongly believe that modern democracy is a phenomenon of the culture of mass literacy that...

began to kick off in the middle of the 18th century and came to full flower in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

That's when we get the spread of the franchise.

That's when we get votes for women.

That's when we get the beginnings of the welfare state.

And I think democracy as we know it goes hand in hand with reading and goes hand in hand with print culture.
