I kind of convinced myself there's going to be nobody here.

And it's rather nice for me because the book does open with Mr. Berman deliberately locking himself out.

So he has an excuse to go and find his daughter in the town on a Friday night.

Where did the idea come from?

I mean, it's interesting now that there's been a lot of talk recently about the House Department because that was a building that I was thinking of, particularly about...

is what if some great monument was to be destroyed?

What would be the more terrible thing that it could not be, that it had been destroyed or that it could not be rebuilt?

Not that we obviously could not build any replacement.

You know, you have a House of Parliament, you have a new House of Parliament, but the spirit, the energy, the genius, the desire, the inspiration, that there will be transcendental inspiration for some great work would no longer be there.

And so I was thinking about that, and I was thinking about that for a very long time, for decades.
