Somebody says to give themselves a bit of time to think of an answer.

Yeah, I mean, there are moments all the way along.

It's not just at the beginning and at the end.

I mean, I think there's always been a point when I've written a novel, and this is, I think, my seventh one, when I've thought, why the hell did I ever get started on this?

You know, is it too late?

to pull out?

Can I kind of just climb down and pretend I never started writing?

Because yeah, you can get very lost.

There's a feeling when you finish it, when you think, I've written something terrible, everyone's going to hate it.

There's a feeling after you've written it when you think, actually, this is really good.

You know, this is brilliant.

I'm great.

You know, there's multiple moments.

And how do you compare that to before you wrote it?

Well, I mean, I say this all the time.

I think I said it to Lara when we were sitting downstairs.

You know, on my way here, I'm thinking about the next book.

And that's a kind of good feeling.

You think, OK, I've still got books in me.

But there's this very nice stage before you write anything.
