I don't buy the argument that the big tech companies make, like Sam Altman, that we need to keep using these large language models because it's going to solve climate change or it's going to solve cancer.
Because something like solving climate change, we actually know how to do that.
We just don't have the political will to do it.
Yeah, right.
So the question then becomes is...
are these language models going to help our political system find compromise?
And at the moment, I think the answer is no.
But there are ways that it could, if you could use it in certain styles and use it carefully and thoughtfully, it might.
But like I said, I'm not massively optimistic.
I am really worried and probably not as worried as you, but I'm not a million miles behind you.
And it might be that...
In a year, I'll come and find you in the woods and say, you were right, mate.
Well, yes.
Massive problem.
No one really knows quite how big of a problem it is because there's not really any reliable numbers on it, but it's a lot and it happens a lot.
And there's a couple of things to say about it immediately, which is when a human lies, it's usually a small lie.
It's a number that they've fudged or made up or whatever.
When a machine lies, they can produce lies that just go on for hundreds of hours.
Because all they really are are machines that produce words in front of other words.
