Matt was a part of my family.
When my dad passed in 1999, Matt basically became my father figure.
My dad, their relationship was so close that when my dad knew that he was dying, he left Matt in charge.
of his image and likeness, family decisions, because he trusted him that he would not only make the right decisions, but he would also make the right decisions for our family and look after us.
And that's what he did.
I look at their friendship on the field and how what Matt did as a fullback, his job blocking for my dad, clearing holes, making sure that he got through and got all the glory.
Matt did the exact same thing off the field.
He was always there and he did it by the kindness of his heart.
From 1999 up to the present day, Matt did this without asking for anything in return.
And that's what shows me what kind of friendship that those two had.
And as a kid growing up and watching them together, I knew what a true friend was.
It was those two together and watching how they cared for each other, how they did everything together.
And man, just...
Just the relationship that grew over time after my dad passed, anything that I ever needed.
Anytime that I picked up the phone, he was there for me.
The relationship that he's had with my kids over the years as well, watching them grow up, Matt was a true best friend.
And I know we all look at Brian's song and we see it's a part of our culture here in Chicago as Bears fans.
But there needs to be a story on 34 and 26.
Because when you look at their friendship and everything that they went through, a true bond, man, there is nothing like it.
So I am grateful for Matsui for all that he did for our entire family, what he's done for the city of Chicago.
