The first lead is in the Hudson Valley, a couple hours north of the city.
Once upon a time, a young girl named Sylvia had lost her mother in this area to a strange creature of the roads, so I knew that there was some kind of energy to this place.
My last time in the Hudson Valley had been in a colder season, but in the height of summer, I swear there has never been a greener place on earth.

The air is so humid it feels like a curtain you're pushing through.
I met my contact from the old Praxis organization at a farm stand outside of Bard College, staffed entirely by women.
The plenty of the farm stand is incredible.
A bouquet of basil, each leaf the size of my palm.
Tomatoes and varieties I've never heard of.
Pickles and fermentations and locally roasted coffee.
I can see why people leave the city for a place like this.
Although I imagine once the lush summer ends and the last of the autumn crowds have gone back to their Brooklyn apartments, that living up here could start to feel real lonely and bleak.
My contact, Joan, came out from the back, hair in two long braids, older than most of the women working there who I think were mostly college kids from Bard.
She sticks out a hand and I shake it.
