The crosswalk is gone.
The road hasn't been fixed in probably five years at least, and I have to maneuver around a big pothole in the center of Main Street, right by where the bookstore had been.
But now it's a corner market with bars on its windows.
I don't think there are two Cottonwoods.
I think I am seeing the same Cottonwood at two different time periods.
I tilt my head the way that allows me to see all the bustling people, so I don't accidentally park on top of one of them.
And I bring Danton to a rolling stop along the curb.
The little trick of time continues as I walk around.
even away from the main street, on the residential side streets near the center of town, where beautiful, restored old houses fetch startling prices, if Zillow is anything to go by.
A shift of my head, just so.
And these restored houses are pre-restoration, which is to say that they are teetering dumps.
Most of them look vacant.
Vines climb their walls, turning homes into hanging gardens.
Left alone, those vines would eventually pull down the houses, erase everything human.
But I can shift my head back and it is the vines that have been erased.
The houses repainted.
The windows repainted.
Ring cameras on every porch, documenting my curiosity.
Is it possible that I am able, in the thinnest parts of the country, to see not only through worlds, but through time?
I know one person who might be able to answer my questions.
