I have to see this.
It's a sculpture park with the world's biggest steering wheel and a weird Abraham Lincoln and then a truly insane-looking Gerald Ford.
When I think of America, I think of a blood-soaked history and a pull toward fascism.
But I also think of this.
Some guy who had an idea.
And it wasn't a good idea necessarily, but he did it.
And it's here now.
And that's beautiful.
And I'm getting devoured by mosquitoes, so back on the road I go.
The first few mornings wash by in the bliss of routine.
When you're younger, routine can feel like a kind of death.
Trapped in a loop when you want to be rocketing out into the unknown.
But as you get older, the unknown holds more worry than wonder.
And the routines are what keep you from flying untethered into space.
As life gets scary, as the stress piles up,
At least I make my coffee like this.
At least I eat my breakfast in this part of the house.
At least we do our morning walk and watch our neighborhood slowly change just as we slowly change.
As Alice and I walk, talking about whatever, it doesn't matter.
