I don't know what I want to eat in the next few minutes.
And now I'm having to think about dinner on Tuesday.
And then translate that into a list and find all those things at the supermarket.
And then your ass has to cash the check that your mouth wrote because you have to actually use those ingredients to make meals.
It's ridiculous.
Give me the worst creatures that slink under the shadows of the underpasses, but spare me the grocery shop.
A marriage is partly to make the trips to the grocery store bearable.
Because when you go together, especially in the middle of the day when maybe you should be doing something else, it has the feeling of a little date
A date that involves an annoying chore, sure, but also an activity in which there is nothing you can do but to push around a small cart.
And how few opportunities in this life, once you're no longer a child, to push around a small cart.
And of course, you can discuss which treats you'd like to buy and whether you should buy them.

Memories of the road.
I'm on something called the Outlaw Trail Scenic Byway in northern Nebraska.
Flat grass on either side, far as I can see.
There was some kind of cruel joke calling this road scenic, unless you merely mean that you can see for tedious miles in every direction, in which case, technically correct.
I stop to buy a soda at a little bowling alley called Eagle Lanes that smells like floor cleaner and popcorn.
There are only four lanes, and they're all empty.
Pull a can from the fridge by the door.
