But something in her expression reminded me of the old man at the gas station.
Tired.
Patient.
Like she'd heard every version of this story before.
Voices, I said finally.
Stuff.
Walking around camp.
Calling our names at night.
Using our voices back at us.
I stopped short of saying the word that had been floating around my head ever since.
Skinwalker.
It felt wrong to say it out loud, like it wasn't mine.
She was quiet for a long moment.
Then she sighed.
"'You went somewhere you weren't supposed to go,' she said."
or you didn't listen when someone told you how to be there.
