And I really don't want to spend too much more time on criticisms of this book, but I think that there's a valid point to be made here that this book was definitely written as a young adult book.
It clearly falls into the YA category.
But I think part of the issue I'm having now is that it's too much Y and not quite enough A. I don't know if you agree, but one thing that I thought is important to cover here is that I really like the character of Wolf.

That spells wolf.
Right.
And the YA nature of this book leans too far into the Y, not far enough into the A. And surprisingly, Eyes of the Dragon, which was also a King YA book, in my opinion, did not suffer from this at all.
I think it threaded that needle just right.
And I think this is why I'm struggling with the book overall.
