We're keenly aware of a feeling of dead time, of the story itself waiting to begin.
And this is a story that embraces the fact that it is fantasy.
And in doing so, it's almost at a meta level, acknowledging its own structure of fantasy.

It's like King and Straub want Jack to start at zero and figure everything out for himself along the way.

It seems like Speedy knows a ton more than he lets on.
And he even says as much like, I can only tell you what I'm allowed to tell you.
By whom?
And who would know?
Like, just tell him everything.
Right.
Set him up.
I kind of want Speedy Parker to show up with a backpack and a guidebook and an explanation and, you know, a magic compass or whatever the hell else this story needs.
