And it can feel like actually a hostile environment.
But in almost none of the stadiums I've ever been to has anything ever broken out into actual conflict.
And again, the reason here is because of norms.
Because when you go to a professional football game or baseball game, the norm is that everybody's there to cheer and you're allowed to cheer for the opposite team and people will maybe give you a hard time or tease you.
but it will never cross a line.
And they have people there to enforce the norms, you know, the ushers, security, that now they scan you when you come in to make sure you're not a risk to anybody bringing in anything dangerous.
And when you do that, you can actually have incredible numbers of people all chanting and cheering and feeling all of the intense emotions associated with groupishness without spilling over into the violence that you see in normal intergroup conflict.
That is something I think that's really important to point out, is that groups can form around all kinds of shared interests, certainly around people who are part of a symphony or a musical group, part of other creative endeavors.
And often those connections are really profound.
And there's lots of good reasons for it.
So there's research showing that when people listen to music together, it actually binds them and generates a shared identity.
This is in part why concerts can be really powerful emotional experiences because everybody's
dancing and moving and just immersed in the music.
And certainly other creative endeavors where you're part of a community where you get a sense of belonging and a sense of distinctiveness are really powerful for driving really strong group identities.
And so for artists, a lot of times they are kind of the rebels of society.
They're
Trying new things, they're creative and different from mainstream society.
And so that actually can be something that makes them feel special, to be part of something that's different from the way everybody else is approaching and thinking about life.
Place is an incredibly powerful way that we find and connect with other people, build shared memories, have a sense of purpose.
And there's lots of symbols associated with place that signal that we're special.
