Instead, they are filtered out, not rejected after consideration, but never considered at all.
The University of California estimated that between 1980 and 2008, the daily information intake of the average American increased by approximately 350%.
That figure has continued to climb since.
The filtering system the brain relies upon was not designed for this volume of input.
And the consequence is not that people make worse decisions about what to pay attention to.
It is that the filtering becomes even more aggressive, more automatic, and less available to conscious override.
The brain is not ignoring music marketing because listeners are inattentive.
It is ignoring marketing because inattention has become the necessary default condition of a mind forced to operate in an environment of chronic informational excess.
The dual process problem.
Why most music marketing talks to the wrong system.
Even when a piece of music marketing does manage to clear the attentional threshold and reach a listener's awareness, it typically fails for a second reason.
It is constructed to appeal to the wrong cognitive system entirely.
The dual process theory of cognition establishes that human decision-making operates through two fundamentally different modes.
System 1 is fast, automatic, emotionally driven, and pre-conscious.
System 2 is deliberate, slow, analytical, and conscious.
Most decisions are made by System 1 and System 2 is called upon far less often than people assume, particularly under conditions of cognitive busyness, time pressure, and distraction.
System 1 does not respond to facts, features, or release dates.
It responds to emotional signals, pattern recognition, and intuitive judgments about whether something feels relevant to the listener's current state.
System 2, however, is capable of evaluating the information in a press release or a Spotify bio, but System 2 is rarely consulted when a listener is without a compelling reason to put in the required effort.
The vast majority of music marketing is constructed as a System 2 appeal.
