The mechanism behind this, however, is not simply nostalgia for well-known artists.
Luminate's research has found that younger audiences discover older music through social media, films, television placements, and algorithmic recommendations.
Songs are being found months or years after release by listeners who encounter them in the right emotional context for the first time.
This discovery is not happening on release day.
It is happening when a listener is in the right emotional state, exposed to the right contextual cue, and the algorithm surfaces something from a catalog that has been patiently waiting to be found.
Thus, how artists should think about their releases is almost entirely contrary to the prevailing mythology.
Music is not milk.
It does not expire.
An album released three years ago is a genuine and welcome discovery for a listener who encounters it today in the right emotional context and on a streaming platform with infinite shelf space.
There is no structural reason why it could not find its audience years from now.
The release is simply the beginning of the music's availability.
Whether it is the right moment for the right listener is an entirely separate question, and one that release day campaigns almost never control for.
The pre-release investment that matters.
If the release day launch campaign is directing resources toward the moment of lowest listener receptivity, then where should those resources be directed instead?
A peer-reviewed study published in Psychology of Marketing that examined the relationship between emotional attachment and brand loyalty found that loyalty develops in stages, beginning with cognitive evaluation of attributes, progressing through effective emotional attachments, and culminating in cognitive commitment, the deep motivational loyalty that drives repeated engagement, advocacy, and long-term retention.
Each stage depends on the preceding one.
Cognitive loyalty, the kind of loyalty that sustains an artist's career, cannot be rushed by a launch campaign.
It requires the emotional attachment that precedes it.
An emotional attachment requires the sustained, emotionally coherent communication of who an artist is and what their work provides to the listener who needs it.
Another study published in Science Direct on corporate brand relationships found that effective trust, the emotional confidence a consumer develops in a brand, which is distinct from the rational knowledge-based variety, develops through sustained genuine emotional communication over time.
