This finding extends well beyond wine and well beyond price.
It demonstrates that the brain does not evaluate stimuli in isolation, but through the frame they arrive in.
A song heard with no context, no narrative, and no signal of why it might matter is processed entirely differently than the same song heard inside a frame that tells the listener what to expect, what it is for, and why it might be worth their attention.
This is precisely the mechanism that the most foundational research in music psychology identifies as central to how listeners actually engage with music.
Research in the emotional responses to music establishes that mechanisms such as episodic memory and evaluative conditioning require an associative frame in order to function.
Such an emotional response is not produced by the audio signal alone.
It is produced by the relationship between the audio signal and the context the listener brings to it, or the context the artist has successfully established around it.
Quality may earn a listener's attention for the length of a single play, sure, but context determines whether that attention deepens into something the listener returns to.
Where context wins, even when quality is identical.
I believe there is no clearer demonstration of this principle than the lo fi genre.
This is not because lo fi is a special genre, but precisely because it is such an ordinary one.
Much of the music within the genre is, by design, sonically similar.
The chord progressions are familiar.
The production aesthetic is intentionally low fidelity.
The tempo, mood, and instrumentation occupy a narrow and consistent range.
This is required for its purpose.
By any conventional measure of musical differentiation, a large proportion of lo-fi tracks are of comparable quality and comparable creative ambition.
And yet, within this genre of largely interchangeable music, some artists generate audiences and engagement dramatically disproportionate to others.
The differentiator is almost never the music itself.
Most often it is the frame the music is placed inside.
