So it became almost a factotum for assault.
She would say, the little girl's being hurt.
She's in trouble.
Somebody should help the little girl.
Ruth's way of dealing with such a horrific attack was to basically leave her body, to act as if it wasn't her.
One of the advantages of dissociative personality disorder is that it doesn't become part of your active memory.
She didn't experience it.
The little girl she watched experienced it.
So it isn't part of her active recollection.
She has no idea that this happened to her.
