Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, Do you love me?
And he said to him, Lord,
You know everything.
You know that I love you.
Jesus said to him
Feed my sheep.
Okay, let's pause and remember that earlier Peter denied Jesus three times over.
And now that threefold denial of Peter is met with a threefold gracious restoration of Jesus.
Three times Peter is asked about his love for Jesus.
And after each affirmative answer, Jesus gives Peter a total of three commissions, three charges to care for his people.
When Peter meets Jesus here at the dead end, his love for Jesus is deepened, and his mission with Jesus is extended.
But when Jesus gives Peter a mission, it's not a mission of comfort or control or certainty.
It is, in fact, the opposite of those things.
Let's go back into the conversation with the words of Jesus in verses 18 through 19.
Jesus says this, Truly, truly I say to you, When you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old you will stretch out your hands and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.
This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.
And after saying this, he said to him, Follow me.
Now church history tells us that Peter would indeed die in a way that glorified God.
He was eventually crucified upside down because he wouldn't stop talking about his King Jesus.
