I grew up in the West and then I spent several years in the South and recognized that these are

very, very different places.

And so I wanted to find a way to explore sort of that politics and region.

So New Mexico had, you know, I'd lived in Albuquerque as a kid, and I really liked Albuquerque.

New Mexico had a fantastic history, Western history program.

So I went there and worked with amazing faculty, and I had a great advisor in David Farber.

And produced this pretty crappy dissertation about Texas panhandle politics.

But it was good enough to be done.

So I was able to get a job.

And then I spent a year at Trinity College in Hartford.

as a sort of visitor, visiting as a student professor, and then got the gig at the College of Worcester 20-plus years ago, and I've had just a really fruitful and productive career there.

How's that?

Yeah, also an Albuquerque kid.

Except the mix.

Yeah.

Uh, so when it came time to, to think through what a dissertation would look like by that point, um, I had settled on, um,

some kind of exploration of the relationship between some frontier mythology and conservative politics.
