US and European law enforcement officers partnered with private sector organizations, including CrowdStrike and the Shadow Server Foundation, to take down a twenty three year old botnet on the internet called Salady.
A botnet is a zombie army of infected devices that are controlled by a bad actor who uses them to disguise and launch cyber attacks.
The public-private team conducted what's called a sinkhole operation, giving the infected devices new commands to cut them off from their criminal overlords.
Instead of the infected devices linking directly back to cyber criminal servers, they communicated directly with each other, a feature that made it more difficult for officials to untangle.
