And is there a little part of them that goes, you know, that was all taken from me, along with everything else, much more significant things that were taken from them, their innocence and their childhood, but also their chance to find out what kind of athlete they were and what they might have been capable of in different circumstances.

Actually, one of the victims said that last month in their victim impact statement.

She said she had needed psychological intervention from the age of nine.

She had had nightmares.

She'd isolated herself.

She had self-harmed due to his actions.

And she said the sport had been a big part of her family and swimming was her, and this is a direct quote, her absolute joy.

But he had robbed her of her potential and she never found out whether she would have ended up a good, a great or mediocre athlete.

And that's, you know, that's an aspect of what they did and the harm that they caused that isn't, I think, considered enough.

Yeah.

So, well, as we know, she was arrested for the murder of her roommate, Meredith Kircher, in 2007.

in Perugia, in Italy, and she was convicted in 2009 and then acquitted in 2011.

And there was never evidence against her.

The whole thing was concocted by an overzealous Italian prosecutor who was really determined to kind of pin something on her.

And a lot of kind of the verdict against her, and the verdict in the public opinion against her was about her

judgment on her behavior and how she behaved.

And she was seen to have not behaved appropriately.

And it was rooted in the most horrendous misogynistic assumptions about how women should behave.

And the kind of things that we see, you know, even held against women who are victims themselves in cases of sexual violence.
